Located in Canberra, Australia, Adam Stainless stands out as a leading manufacturer and supplier of AWS Class E309/309L‑16 electrodes. These electrodes are crafted to comply with AWS A5.4 / ASME SFA‑5.4 standards and come in various diameters, perfectly suited for both AC and DC applications. With rigorous in-house quality controls, Adam Stainless guarantees that every batch meets strict chemical and mechanical standards, ensuring dependable, high-performance welds even in the toughest conditions across Australia.
The E309/309L‑16 electrode deposit features around 22‑25% chromium and 12‑14% nickel, with a low carbon content (≤ 0.04% for the “L” version) to minimize carbide precipitation and enhance corrosion resistance. It also contains minor alloying elements like manganese, silicon, and small amounts of phosphorus, sulfur, copper, and molybdenum. Welds made with E309/309L‑16 typically exhibit a tensile strength of about 520‑600 MPa (≈75‑87 ksi), an elongation of around 30‑35%, and commendable ductility. The rutile coating (marked by “‑16”) improves arc stability and makes welding easier in all positions.

These electrodes offer good resistance to oxidation and corrosion in moderate environments. Typically available in sizes ranging from 1/16″ to 1/8″ in diameter, they are ideal for applications requiring light coatings and smooth welding.
Designed for enhanced corrosion resistance and durability, these electrodes are available in diameters from 3/32″ to 5/32″. The heavy coating ensures a robust weld in demanding conditions, providing stronger welds with superior mechanical properties.
Offering excellent corrosion resistance, these electrodes are used in shielded metal arc welding applications. They are available in diameters such as 1/16″, 3/32″, and 1/8″, providing versatile options for various welding needs.
E309/309L‑16 electrodes are ideal for creating robust welds between stainless steel and stainless steel, or stainless steel and carbon or low-alloy steels, especially in high-heat or corrosive settings. Common applications include the fabrication of chemical processing equipment, boilers, exhaust systems, and cladding operations. Thanks to their resistance to oxidation and scaling at high temperatures, they are perfect for furnace components, flue ducts, and repair tasks in power generation. The “L” variant offers enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion, making it particularly valuable in situations where welded joints face cyclic heating.
AWS Class E309/309L-16 electrodes are primarily used for welding stainless steels, particularly for joining dissimilar metals like carbon steel to stainless steel. These electrodes provide excellent corrosion resistance, making them suitable for applications in industries like food processing, chemical, and power generation. They are also used in automotive, pressure vessel, and marine industries, where high strength, durability and resistance to oxidation are essential. The low carbon content (309L) reduces carbide precipitation, ensuring enhanced weld quality.
